Nintendo's Console Duel: New Model's Rise and Original's Enduring Legacy

Nintendo’s latest quarterly report for the April–June period showcases a fascinating performance chart on its console lineup, with both the refreshed system and the original device drawing attention from fans and industry watchers alike.

The upgraded console, which entered the market in June 2025, logged 3.82 million units sold over the quarter—somewhat lower than its debut period when it achieved record-breaking first-day figures. Its total sales now reach 23.68 million, with early indications that July has added more to that number. Despite a recent price revision in Japan that took effect on May 25 (and later in other markets on September 1), Nintendo reports that the device is meeting expectations and compares favorably with the trajectory of its previous model.

The original console, naturally experiencing a drop in sales after the successor’s launch, still managed to sell 0.66 million units during the same period. Its overall sales have now climbed to 156.59 million units, bringing it closer to the legendary status of a classic competitor that once achieved 160.63 million units sold worldwide. Should holiday demand be strong, there is speculation that this platform might edge ahead as a global sales leader in the near future, though the outcome remains uncertain.
